Here is the distinction most people miss. Protein fills gaps temporarily—like stuffing cardboard into a broken window frame. Bond multipliers (think Olaplex or similar) actually reconnect the broken disulfide bonds. They're not the same thing. Run a side-by-side test: apply a protein treatment to one side of your head, a bond multiplier to the other. Use the same shampoo, same drying method, same number of washes. After two weeks, compare. Which side feels less like a ladder with missing rungs? Which side snaps less under the wet stretch test?
Anecdotal but consistent: I have seen protein work beautifully on fine, low-porosity hair and backfire on coarse, high-porosity hair. The bond multiplier tends to work more universally but costs more. Trade-off—protein is cheap and fast; bond multipliers take four to six applications to show real change.
